Our Birds...
Harris Hawk. Latin Name (Parabuteo unicinctus) "Jess" Jess hatched in April 2003 her parents Hannah and Hearn are two injured Harris's that can no longer fly. Jess is an acceptional bird with a fantastic personality. She is extremely laid back and shows no aggression to humans whatsoever, this makes her perfect for displays and other events including hawk walks. Jess is a real extrovert and likes nothing better then to show off in front of a crowd.
Ferruginous Hawk. Latin Name (Buteo regalis) "Olga" Olga is 8 years old, she is the largest hawk at Countrywide Falconry. Althought she looks wild and aggressive she is really like a kitten! But don't be fooled, when she is soaring 3 or 4 hundred feet in the sky and she sees a rabbit, she will fold her wings and plummet to earth to claim her meal - a most impressive sight!
Lanner Falcon. Latin Name (Falco biarmicus) "Chillie" Chillie is two years old, he was given to us as an injured bird that a Falconer could no longer keep. Chillie is one of our favourite birds of prey, being a falcon he is very impressive when he flies. Chillie will ring up into the sky using thermals reaching a height of several thousand feet, he will wait there until we call him to the lure. Chillie will fold his wings and stoop to earth at a speed of more then 80 miles an hour and then try to catch the lure.
Bengal Eagle Owl. Latin Name (Bubo bubo bengalensis) "Elsa" Elsa is by far my favourite bird of prey, not just because she is an Owl, but because of her personality. Elsa was hatched in 1991, I brought her home as a 2-week-old chick, and she was then hand reared by my family including the dog. She thinks that I am her dad and follows me everywhere on the farm. Elsa's favourite sport is chasing a member of the public who is running with a piece of meat attached to a piece of string, I think she imagines that it is a item of prey.
Barn Owl. Latin Name (Tyto alba) "Ghost" I rescued Ghost in 1999, he was entangled on a washing line by his "Jessies" (small strap around the birds leg allowing the attachment of a leash). No one claimed him so he became a member of my display team. Like all the birds he has a wonderful personality, very rarely being aggressive, and likes nothing better then having his ears tickled. When Ghost flies it is in complete silence. He will fly around you then silently descend and land on your shoulder and then whisper in your ear for a tit bit. Best Regards, PS.
